My Thoughts On The Hannity Catholic Controversy

I think that everyone knows about the Hannity Catholic Controversy by now, so I won’t waste time going over the details.  However, I did want to throw in my 2 cents worth on the groups that are calling for a boycott of Hannity.  I have felt for a few years that Hannity was more the voice box of the Republican Party than of Catholic teachings (note his stances of the priest scandal and Rudy Giuliani).  The birth control issue is just more evidence of this.  No, Hannity is not a model Catholic, and contrary to the arguments of some of his supporters, dissent on birth control is not a small issue…it is the foundation of the culture of life.  However, we have many battle fronts that we are fighting in the culture war right now, and birth control is certainly an issue that takes the back burner to unfettered abortion on demand.  I will align myself with protestants, Mormons, muslims, atheists, and even cafeteria catholics like Hannity in order to stop the horror of abortion from continuing.  Once we achieve this goal, we can move educating people better on to some of the issues that we have less support on.  At least 2/3 of people agree that abortion is not a good thing, even if half of those people want to keep it legal.  I wish that support of church teachings on birth control had even close to this amount of public support.  When you are in a war (and we are here), we must pick the battles first that we are most likely to win.  If we all put our concerted effort into the abortion battle, then we will win it.  Once we win that battle, we can use that momentum to move on to the harder battles that will still lie ahead.  There was a time less than 100 years ago when even protestants agreed with Catholic teachings on birth control, and I believe that that day will return again, but it will be a long hard fight to remind them of the reasons why.  In the meantime, let’s not abandon some of our most vocal supporters on issues that still matter a lot.
